The recordings on this cassette were made in Chaiyaphum Province, Isaan, Thailand during January 2009. Side A was recorded in Banokhaotong village and is performed entirely by Mr. Yiboon, a rice farmer who has been playing the khaen for over 40 years. The 2nd side is recorded in Nanongtong village and features performances from 2 players. The first is Mr. Sootjai followed by Mr. Sood, who is a renowned khaen maker and master player. The recordings presented here are all of solo khaen performances.

Bario is located over 3,000 feet above sea level in the interior of Malaysian Borneo close to the Kalimantan border. It is surrounded by the Tamabu mountain range and dense primary jungle. The Kelabit and Penan tribes have lived in the area for generations.

A series of very hard to find films on Borneo produced by Tom Harrisson and Hugh Gibb and first broadcast on the BBC in the late 1950s. The series was filmed in a variety of locations throughout Borneo and contains footage on various tribal groups and their ways of life, Niah cave excavations, birds nest soup, the rainforest, rivers and swamps.
